Throughout time, many cultures have relied on sharing music together to build community and supportive healing experiences for each other. Sound Healing encompasses just about every way humans can use music and sound to alter their feelings, thoughts and emotions.
I’ll start by describing Sound Healing as an activity of creating sound or absorbing sound in order to achieve a desired result. Sound Healing can feature sound created by your voice, my voice, Tibetan or crystal bowls, drums, chimes, flutes, stringed instruments, percussion and other instruments including electronic music.
As a Sound Healing Practitioner, the Sound Healing music that I create is based on the understanding that we hold the energy of undesired emotions and feelings in our physical body and that sound and music can shift, evolve, transform and change those unwanted sensations into more desirable ones.
We can create sound and/or we can listen, absorb and interact with the sound. Sometimes when we don’t want to feel unpleasant emotions, having music vibrate with that “stuck” part of us allows us to accept our feelings and eventually push through it to find resolution. If that sounds a bit complex, let me simplify this concept for you.
Do you like music?
Of course you do!
But are you willing to admit that the music you like might not be the same music that I like? And is it okay that we like different music?
Well, yes, people do have their musical favorites and advocate for bands and groups they like. And why is that? Well, we are vibrating energy and when we feel a familiarity or a resonance with a certain type of music, we want to listen to it and share it with others!
In some ways, musical tastes are similar to food tastes. There is a lot of music out there in the world. And there is a lot of food represented in different countries and cultures in the world too. And yet, we have our favorites along with our list of dislikes.
What is it about sound that makes it healing?
Sound often reaches us through our emotions and can bypass our active thoughts. We are attracted to music that matches how we feel (like listening to sad music when we feel sad) or we gravitate towards music that changes how we feel in some way.
One example is how you might have specific tunes you listen to when exercising, especially if you’re feeling tired and reluctant to get moving. That exercise playlist has upbeat songs chosen intentionally to energize your body into motion. In contrast, choosing music to relax can be understood as a way of providing Sound Healing for enabling the body and mind to shift from a busy quality to more calm.
Why You Should Care About What Music You Listen To
What you like about music in general is what you’ll probably like about music intended as Sound Healing. If you like music with a lot of rhythmic beats, you’ll probably respond well to percussive and repetitive patterns in Sound Healing music.
If you prefer melodies and hearing connected yet changing notes, you may prefer Sound Healing music that has a more melodic quality to it. But the one thing that stays constant in your response to music and sound. You will feel in resonance with the music or you will feel disconnected to it. Or you might claim to not feel anything at all.
The Sound Healing music I provide as a Sound Healing Practitioner is not always pleasant to listen to at first. Why is that? It depends on the emotional state you are in and what you are intending to shift. For example, if you feel angry, it’s likely that you need to process that anger to some degree before calming down.
Hearing gentle pleasant-sounding melodies will not necessarily get you there right away. You might need to hear something bold and strong to match your anger for a while before you and your emotions are ready to shift into a more peaceful state where the calmer Sound Healing music can come into play. A Sound Healing Practitioner can help you with customized sounds for your needs and desired shift.

When would someone choose Sound Healing?
I find most often that my clients stumble across Sound Healing when they are looking for relief to some emotional or physical tension. Perhaps they have chronic pain or a high-level of stress. Sometimes they are going through a major life event that requires a big decision. When thoughts are overwhelming, Sound Healing is a therapeutic experience.
People who are open to holistic modalities and alternative methods of healing find Sound Healing a great gift. Huge results can happen in one session and clients feel empowered as their motivation and desire to improve their situations. I have helped clients alleviate chronic pain, anxiety, confusion about life’s situations, fatigue and more.
How to Get Started with Sound Healing
Start with noticing the music you like and don’t like. Bonus points if you recognize when some of your favourite songs don’t resonate with your mood and you have awareness around choosing something else to listen to instead.
Be aware of the people in your life like your friends, family and coworkers and how they speak to you. Especially how you interpret their voices. Do you find their voices loving and kind? Or nagging and critical? And what about the voice in your own head? What are you telling yourself? And how do you feel about all these words and how you hear and feel them?
Whether you are affected positively or negatively by other people’s words, I do advocate for you to find some sound or music that you can experience to reset that experience, if needed. Sometimes it’s easier to understand situations that you are not immersed in which is how a Sound Healing Practitioner can help.
